Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing someone to support you on your quest to wellness is an important decision. To help you decide if you would like to work together, i’ve included some answers to the most commonly asked questions that we get from clients considering therapy with us.

Yes, it is! When you call you will be prompted to choose an extension for the person you would like to speak to. If they do not answer, please leave a message and your call will be returned within 2 hours. You can also text us if you prefer!

Therapy’s an added cost. Is it worth it?

Therapy is a financial commitment. It’s an investment in yourself and your ability to become aware of self-sabotaging patterns and more capable of practicing new, more effective thoughts and behaviors. This ability to think and behave more effectively can profoundly and positively impact your future relationships, your work, your health, and even your finances. If you’re like most of the individuals i’ve worked with, you’ve likely already invested a lot of time and energy and money into your education, your career, your home, and your physical health. I truly believe that investing in therapy as an act of self-care can be a continued investment in your overall wellbeing and success in life.

Do you accept insurance?

Despite the many challenges and areas of concern in using insurance to cover mental health therapy, clients may still elect to do so. Quality psychological services can be costly so it’s completely understandable that getting reimbursed for at least some of the associated costs relieves any financial burden.

We currently accept: Lyra, Headway, United Healthcare, Optum, Cigna, Aetna, Carisk, Humana, AvMed, and Magellan.

If we are out of your network such as that for Blue Cross clients and you have out of network benefits, and don’t have time to submit your superbill to insurance? Let us introduce you to better. Better is a HIPAA compliant service that submits superbills to your insurance provider on your behalf. The fee is 10% of whatever money you receive from the insurance company. If you don’t receive compensation (e.g., unmet deductible, denial, etc.) they don’t collect a payment.

*note that keys gate wellness associates has no relationship with better and does not receive any compensation from the company.

How do i know if you’re the right therapist for me?

Choosing a therapist is a very personal decision. Therapy is only as effective as the relationship between therapist and client and because of this i believe the best way to determine if a psychotherapist is right for you is to book a session and simply meet with her or him and to trust your instincts when you are with them. Ask yourself: “can i see myself feeling safe and comfortable with this person? Does it seem like they understand me ?” you can also ask yourself this question during and after an initial free 15 min phone consultation before you book that first session.

What type of clients do you work with?

We work with individuals, couples, parents and families of all different identities and ethnicities from all over the world. Many of our clients are professionals and we also work extensively with graduate, undergrad, and high school students. Also, while some of our clients have been to therapy before, the vast majority of our clients; about 80%are first-timers to therapy. Finally, while our clients’ professions, ages, ethnicities, gender expressions, sexual orientations, religions, family backgrounds, and lifestyles vary widely, all of them share something in common: they are people who are in pain and who are at a point where they are willing to commit and invest in themselves and in therapy in order to change and create something different in their lives.

What exactly is therapy?

Put simply, therapy, also called psychotherapy or counseling; depending of the level of education of the provider, is the process of meeting with a trained and credentialed professional on a weekly, ongoing basis to help you recognize and change deep-rooted and potentially self-sabotaging mental and emotional behaviors, thoughts, and patterns that are keeping you feeling stuck, in pain, and away from the life you want to live

What can i expect from our first session?

Your first in-person meeting with your provider is what’s known as an intake session. It’s different from a traditional therapy session because this will be a time for your psychologist to gather your case history, and together discuss why you have decided to pursue therapy and what your goals are for your time together. It’s also an opportunity for you to get to know your therapist, ask any questions you may have, and to see how you feel with them. At the end of the session, you can decide together if it feels right to move forward in scheduling another session and beginning the rest of the therapeutic journey. Please note that this first session is not complimentary; it is a fully paid session. If you would like a complimentary 15-minute consult call to assess if a keys gate wellness associate is a good fit in advance of the first session.

How long does therapy last? How will i know when i’m done?

The duration of therapy looks different for everyone. And it also; highly depends on the therapy modality being utilized. For some, six months following an acute stressor (such as a breakup or loss of a loved one) is adequate. For others looking to change deeply rooted patterns and belief systems, the process may take longer. On average, we see our psychotherapy clients for around 12 months. Pcit and group clients are usually done in a much shorter period of time. You can trust that your therapist will keep checking in with you throughout your work together to determine if it feels appropriate and timely to end therapy

Is online video counseling confidential and private?

Yes! As much as it possibly can be. Keys gate wellness associates, conduct all online video counseling on a secure, password protected laptop at their office using a video conferencing software that is trusted, and HIPAA compliant. We also insist that our clients take their online video sessions in a closed, private room to ensure privacy. We do everything we can to comply with data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding your medical information.

How does online video counseling work?

At the date and time of your scheduled session, you will click on the link sent to you by your therapist via the video conferencing software. When you click on the link, a window will pop up with their face, and you will see and hear them; and they will see and hear you. Then you can begin your 60-minute session as you would if you were sitting at their office. At the end of the 60-minutes, your therapist will end the video call and you will both be disconnected from the video conferencing software.

Is online video counseling as effective as in-person therapy?

It certainly can be! Whether you are in-person or videoconferencing, the single biggest thing that will make therapy effective is whether you and your therapist have a good bond and if you feel comfortable with them. In my experience, it’s just as easy to experience this over video conferencing as it can be in person. That said, what’s ideal is that your initial session takes place at our office or your home to at least meet once in person; if your life and schedule allows. This can often make the connection feel “more real” but, again, it’s not necessary. Many of our clients live far or have hectic careers and can never make it into our office find the connection just as effective and helpful as if they were working with someone in-person.
